According to Stewards starch hydrolysis theory, which one of the following is the principal reason for the opening of stomata during daytime?

    A)  Efflux of \[{{K}^{+}}\]ions from guard cells under the influence of ABA hormone

    B)  Photosynthetic utilization of \[C{{O}_{2}}\]in guard cells

    C)  Influx of \[{{K}^{+}}\]ions into guard cells under the influence of ABA hormone

    D)  Conversion of sugar into starch in guard cells

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

According    to    Stewards    starch-sugar Inter conversion theory, as a result of photosynthesis,\[C{{O}_{2}}\]concentration in guard cells decreases which leads to increase pH in them during day light. This favours hydrolysis of starch (insoluble) into glucose-1- phosphate (soluble) so that osmotic potential becomes  lower in guard cells. As a result of this water enters into the guard cells by osmotic diffusion from the surrounding epidermal and mesophyll cells. Guard cells become turgid and stomata open.
