This favours hydrolysis of starch (insoluble) into glucose-1- phosphate (soluble) so that osmotic potential becomes lower in guard cells. As a result of this water enters into the guard cells by osmotic diffusion from the surrounding epidermal and mesophyll cells. Guard cells become turgid and stomata open.
