    Due to secondary growth in stelar region, the plant needs a new protective covering. For this purpose, the permanent living cells in the outer cortical region become meristematic and give rise to a secondary lateral meristem, called cork cambium or phellogen. Fascicular cambium is the secondary lateral meristem.
