  • question_answer
An osmometer is filled with 0.5 M solution \[NaCl\] in water. In which of the following to Buttons it must be immersed in order to make it shrink?

    A)  \[0.5M\]solution

    B)  \[0.05M\]solution

    C)  Distilled water

    D)  \[0.75M\]solution

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

: If an ohmmeter filled with 0.5 M solution of \[NaCl\] is immersed in a hypertonic solution (having higher osmotic concentration), the level of solution contained in it will go down (shrink) due to exosmosis (osmotic withdrawal of water). 0.75 M solution is hypertonic to 0.5 M solution. Hence, the level of solution in ohmmeter containing 0.5 M solution, if dipped in 0.75 M solution will go down.
