  • question_answer
Statement A: Photorespiration decreases photosynthetic output. Statement B: In photo respiratory pathway, neither ATP nor NADPH is produced.

    A)  Statement A is correct and statement B is wrong.

    B)  Both the statements A and B are correct.

    C)  Statement B is correct and statement A is wrong.

    D)  Both statements A and B are wrong.

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

: Photorespiration is a cyclic process in which RuBisCo acts as an oxygenase enzyme instead of carboxylase enzyme. Active site of this enzyme is same for both of these activities. In \[{{C}_{3}}\] plants, some \[{{O}_{2}}\] always bind to RuBisCo. \[\underset{(5C)}{\mathop{Ribulose-1,5-biphosphate}}\,\text{ }+{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow[Oxygenasse]{RuBP}\] \[\underset{(3C)}{\mathop{PCA}}\,+\underset{(2C)}{\mathop{Phosphoglycolate}}\,\] Photorespiration does not produce energy or reducing power. Rather, it consumes energy. Further, it undoes the work of photosynthesis. There is 25% loss of fixed \[C{{O}_{2}}\].
