    Meiosis in Dryopteris takes-place during

    A)  gamete formation

    B)  spore germination

    C)  zygote formation

    D)  spore formation

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The plant body of Dryopteris is sporophytic. Dryopteris is homosporous. The spores are formed within sporangia. The development of sporangia is leptosporangiate type. Mature sporangium consists of a stalk and body or capsule. The capsue encloses 8 or sometime 16 spore mother cells which divide meiotically and form 32 or. 64 haploid spores. The spore germinate and gives rise to gametophyte (prothallus). The male and female reproductive organs are antheridia and archegonia respectively. The male and female gametes are formed by mitotic division. Fertilization occurs in the presence of water resulting in the formation of diploid zygote.
