The infective stage of Plasmodium is :

    A)  sporozoite

    B)  trophozoite

    C)  merozoite

    D)  schizont

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The infective stage of Plasmodium is sporozoite. These are small spindle shaped, uninucleate organisms, measuring 11 - 12 \[\mu \]in length and 0.5 - \[\mu \]in width. After penetrating a hepatic cell each sporozoite becomes cryptozoite. Within this structure the mitochondrion also increase during maturation and buds off to produce many small mitochondria. It grows for a number of days and becomes a spherical and non pigmented schizont. Micro meta-cryptomerozoites enter into the blood stream and each enters the red blood corpuscles and assumes rounded disc like shape with single nucleus called trophozoites.
