    Maximum transpiration occurs in :

    A)  algal cells

    B)  xerophytic plants

    C)  mesophytic plants

    D)  hydrophytic plants

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Mesophytic plants are amphistomatous i.e. they have stomata on both upper and lower surface and guard cells show frequent movement. So they do maximum transpiration. Hydrophytes are plants of wet areas with soft stems of moderate height, large thin leaves with hydathodes for excreting excess water in guttation, e.g.. Ranunculus scleratus. Xerophytes are plants of dry habitats which are faced with the problem of more water loss through transpiration than is the water available from soil, e.g.. Acacia. The algae show three types of cellular organization, prokaryotic, mesokaryotic and eukaryotic. Somata and vascular tissue are usually absent.
