In which of the following stages the chromosomes appear thin, long and thread like?

    A)  Zygotene

    B)  Pachytene

    C)  Leptotene

    D)  Diakinesis

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

In leptotene stage of prophase-I which is longest phase of meiosis, chromosomes first appear are separate thin, long, fine threads. Zygotene sub-phase is characterised by the pairing of homologous chromosomes (also known as synapsis) which takes place by their lateral joining. At this stage each chromosome pair have one maternal and one paternal chromosomes of similar type. Pachytene is most significant stage and characterised by shortening and thickening of chromosomes. At this stage bivalent splits and 4 stranded chromatids are visible and crossing over takes place. Diakinesis stage involves the completion of terminalisation, complete disappearance of nuclear membrane and nucleoli. Spindle starts to develop with or without centrioles.
