  • question_answer
If a body falling from rest described distance\[{{s}_{1,}}\]\[{{s}_{2,}}\]and.\[{{s}_{3,}}\] in the first, second and third seconds of its fall, then the ratio \[{{s}_{1,}}:\,{{s}_{2,}}:\,{{s}_{3,}}\]will be :

    A) 1 : 4 : 9

    B) 1 : 3 : 5

    C)  1 : 2 : 3

    D)  1 : 1 : 1

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Distance travelled by the body in nth second is given by \[{{S}_{n}}=u+\frac{1}{2}g\,(2n-1)\] where u is initial velocity of body. For \[n=1\] \[{{s}_{1}}=0+\frac{1}{2}\,g(2\times 1-1)=g/2\] For \[n=2,\,{{s}_{2}}=\frac{1}{2}g(2\times 2-1)=3g/2\] For \[n=3,\,{{s}_{3}}=\frac{1}{2}g(2\times 3-1)=5g/2\] Hence, the ratio \[{{s}_{1}}:{{s}_{2}}:{{s}_{3}}=1:3:5\]
