The \[6563\,\overset{o}{\mathop{A}}\,\] line emitted by hydrogen atom in a star is found to be red shifted by 15 A. The speed with which the star is receding from the earth is :

    A)  \[9.66\times {{10}^{9}}m/s\]

    B)  \[6.86\times {{10}^{5}}m/s\]

    C)  \[7.78\times {{10}^{5}}m/s\]

    D)  none of these

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    From Hubbles law the red shift (z) is directly proportional to the distance (r) of the galaxy from us, i.e., \[z=\frac{d\lambda }{\lambda }=\frac{speed\text{ }of\text{ }galaxy}{speed\text{ }of\text{ }light\text{ }\left( c \right)}\] \[\Rightarrow \] Speed of galaxy \[=\frac{d\lambda }{\lambda }\times c\] Here, \[d\,\lambda =\lambda -{{\lambda }_{0}}=15\,\overset{o}{\mathop{A}}\,,\,{{\lambda }_{0}}=6563\,\overset{o}{\mathop{A}}\,\]. \[\Rightarrow \] Speed of galaxy \[=\frac{15}{6563}\times 3\times {{10}^{8}}\] \[=6.86\times {{10}^{5}}m/s\].
