Cyanide resistant respiration is characteristic of:

    A)  viruses

    B)  bacteria

    C)  plants

    D)  animals

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Respiration is the enzyme mediated process of biological oxidation of food material such as carbohydrate, fat, protein. Cyanide and azide are effective inhibitors of respiration. However in plants this effect is minor. The respiration in plants is continue even when cytochrome oxidase is blocked because the mitochondria has an alternative route allowing transport of electrons to oxygen from ubiquinone to a flavoprotien to oxidase. This respiration is known as cyanide resistant respiration. A little phosphorylaton is coupled to this pathway and mainly heat is produced. Viruses do not have their own metabolic maschinery and use the host maschery.
