The function of glyoxysome is :

    A)  protein metabolism

    B)  carbohydrate metabolism

    C)  fat metabolism

    D)  protein synthesis

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

Glyoxysomes are named so because they contains enzymes for glyoxylate cycle through which fats are converted into carbohydrate. In this cycle two molecules of aceryl Co-A produced by fatty acids breakdown are used to make succinic acid which leaves the glyoxysome and is converted to glucose. The proteins are synthesized on ribosomes. Ribosomes are 70S type in prokaryote and both 70S and 80S type in eukaryote. Carbohydrate metabolism takes place in mitochondria (catabolism) and chloroplast (anabolism).
