A bullet is tired from a gun with a speed of 1000 m/s in order to hit a target 100 m away. The height above the target the gun should be aimed will be : (The resistance of air is negligible and \[g=10\,m/{{s}^{2}}\])

    A)  25 cm

    B)  12 cm

    C)  9 cm

    D)  5 cm

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Key Idea: Bullet is fired from rest hence initial velocity is zero. Time taken by the bullet in covering the horizontal distance R is \[t=\frac{distance}{speed}=\frac{100}{1000}=0.1\,s\] During this time, the bullet falls down vertically a distance h. \[h=ut+\frac{1}{2}g{{t}^{2}}\] Given, \[u=0,t=0.1\,s,\,g=10\,m/{{s}^{2}}\] \[\therefore \] \[h=0+\frac{1}{2}\times 10\times {{(0.1)}^{2}}=0.05\,m=5\,cm\].
