Bacterial mutants requiring special nutrients are known as :

    A)  prototrophs

    B)  autotrophs

    C)  heterotrophs

    D)  auxotrophs

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

In bacteria mutation occurs which results in loss of the ability to synthesize an essential metabolite such as amino acid or growth factor. It will express itself in a nutritional requirement for that substrate such mutants are known as auxotrophs. An auxotroph may be derived from the wild type or from a mutant derivative of the wild type. The parent from which the auxotroph was derived is called as prototroph. A prototroph may or may not be the wild type. The organisms able to use \[C{{O}_{3}}\] as a sale source of carbon are called autotrophs. Heterotrophs (chemoorganotrophs) are organisms obtaining their energy from the oxidation of organic compound.
