A nonsense mutation results into :

    A)  stoppage of transcription

    B)  change in protein structure

    C)  stoppage of protein synthesis

    D)  termination of polypeptide chain

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Mutations are sudden and heritable changes in the genotype of organism. Any substance or physical condition that bring about mutation is called mutagen. The mutation as classified according to consequent change in amino acid sequence are as follow: (i) Nonsense or chain termination mutation: They arise when a codon for an amino acid is mutated into a termination codon resulting   in termination of polypeptide chain. (ii) Missense mutation: They change the meaning of the codon i. e, changing one amino acid to another. (iii) Silent mutation: They change a nucleotide but not the amino acid sequence because they affect the third position of the codon which is usually less important in coding.
