Which of the following required in translocation of food in plants?

    A)  Xylem

    B)  Phloem

    C)  Sclerenchyma

    D)  Collenchyma

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Phloem is the vascular tissue which posses tubular structures for transport of food. The sieve tubes are long slender, tube-like structures involved in transport of organic solutes (sucrose) throughout plant. These are formed by end to end fusion of sieve elements. Xylem is also a vascular tissue. It has two main functions i.e., conduction of water and mineral salts and mechanical support. Xylem vessels are characteristic conducting units of xylem in angiosperms. Collenchyma is consist of living cells. It is formed by deposition of cellulose and pectic substances at the comers of the parenchymatous cells. Sclerenchyma cells are dead cells with thick lignified cell walls. The function of sclerenchyma is to provide support and mechanical strength to the plant.
