Which one of the gas is present today but was absent about 3.5 million years ago?

    A)  \[{{O}_{2}}\]

    B)  \[{{N}_{2}}\]

    C)  \[{{H}_{2}}\]

    D)  \[C{{H}_{4}}\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

The primitive atmosphere of earth (about 3.5 million year ago) was reducing due to lack of\[{{O}_{2}}\]. The first photosynthetic organisms (cyanobacteria) evolved about 3300-3500 million year ago began to release oxygen as by product of photosynthesis and thus converting the earths atmosphere into an oxidising. Besides water, a variety of gases were present, on the primitive earth. The most abundant being methane, carbondioxide, nitrogen and ammonia. In addition trace amounts of carbon monoxide and hydrogen likely existed, as well as large reservoirs of sulphides, as a mixture of \[{{H}_{2}}S\] and FeS.
