In man, artificial pace-maker is implanted due to defects in:

    A)  SA node

    B)  AV node

    C)  Mitral valve

    D)  Purkinje fibres

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

In man artificial pac-maker is implanted due to defects in SA node. The use of artificial pace-maker to pace the heart on a long term basis dates back to 19th century when Chardack introduced a fully implantable pace maker. The pace-maker system consists of a pulse generator and an electrode. When the wave of contraction originating from sinuatrical node reaches the atrio-ventricular node (AV node-pacesetter) the latter is stimulated and excitatory impulses are rapidly transmitted from it to all parts of the ventricles via bundle of His and Purldnjes fibres. The atrioventricular opening between the left atrium and the left ventricle is guarded by the bicuspid valve also called mitral valve (having two flaps).
