    Niacin deficiency leads to :

    A)  pellagra

    B)  osteomalacia

    C)  marasmus

    D)  scurvy

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Niacin forms two coenzymes: nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP). Deficiency of niacin causes a disease called pellagra. Pellagra is characterised by three Ds namely dematitis, diarrhoea and dementia. Deficiency of vitamin C causes Scurvy, which is characterised by spongy and bleeding gums, loose and falling teeth, fragility of blood capillaries etc. Osteomalacia is caused by deficiency of vitamin D in adults. It is characterised by weak bones liable to easy fracture. Marasmus develops when a diet does not supply enough energy for normal body functions. It is common in infants under one year of age.
