Osmotic pressure of a solution is :

    A)  greater than pure solvent

    B)  less than pure solvent

    C)  equal to pure solvent

    D)  less than or greater than pure solvent

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Osmotic pressure is maximum pressure which can develop in an osmotically active solution when it is separated from its pure solvent by a semipermeable membrane under ideal conditions of osmosis that do not allow dilution of solution. Osmotic pressure of a solution is greater than pure solvent. The osmotic pressure of hypotonic solution is low whereas high of hypertonic solution.
