Which of the following is not correct for carboxylic acids?

    A)  The lower acids are soluble in water

    B)  Higher members are insoluble in water

    C)  The solubility increases with branching

    D)  They unite in water and take proton from solvent

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    (i) Lower carboxylic acids are more soluble in water due to hydrogen bonding. The solubility of higher carboxylic acids is less due to large water repelling alkyl group. Solubility of branched carboxylic acid is more due to less surface area. (ii) Carboxylic acids are acidic in nature. They give out proton when dissolved in water. \[RCOOH\xrightarrow{{{H}_{2}}O}RCO{{O}^{-}}+\underset{proton}{\mathop{{{H}^{+}}}}\,\]
