Activity of succinic dehydrogenase involves the following in TCA cycle :

    A)  NAD

    B)  FAD

    C)  GDP

    D)  ATP

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Krebs cycle or tricarboxylic acid cycle occurs in mitochondrial matrix. Upon entering the mitochondria pyruvate is first converted to acetyl Co-A and then undergo about eight steps of reaction. The succinate, which is formed from succinyl Co-A, undergoes dehydrogenation in the presence of enzyme succinate dehydrogenase. During this reaction two hydrogen atoms are accepted by FAD to form \[FAD{{H}_{2}}\] Succinate + \[FAD\underset{dehydrogenase}{\overset{Succinate}{\longleftrightarrow}}\] Fumerate + \[FAD{{H}_{2}}\] Succinyl synthetase catalyse the synthesis of succinate from succinyl Co-A with synthesis of one molecule of GTP. NAD converted into NADH during 3 different reactions in Krebs cycle. ATP is formed during electron transport chain in the respiration and photophosphorylation in photosynthesis.
