A compound has a vapour density of 29. On warming an aqueous solution of alkali, it gives a yellow precipitate. The compound is:

    A)  \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{H}_{2}}CHO\]

    B)  \[C{{H}_{3}}CHOHC{{H}_{3}}\]

    C)  \[C{{H}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}\]

    D)  \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{H}_{2}}COOH\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Key Idea: (i) First find the molecular weight of compound. (ii) Only aldehydes give yellow ppt. with alkali. Molecular weight \[=2\times \] vapour density \[=2\times 29\]  = 58 The compounds having molecular weight 58 are \[C{{H}_{2}}C{{H}_{2}}CHO\] and \[C{{H}_{3}}COC{{H}_{3}}\]. \[\because \] Only aldehydes give yellow ppt. with alkali. \[\therefore \] \[C{{H}_{3}}C{{H}_{2}}CHO\] is the correct answer.
