    Humus is present in :

    A)  horizon-A

    B)  horizon-0

    C)  horizon-B

    D)  horizon-C

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Various processes of soil development result in the differentiation of soil into a series of horizontal zones, which differ in morphology, chemical composition and biological activity. 0-horizon is composed of fresh or partially decomposed organic matter (duff). This horizon is well developed in forests and may be completely absent in grasslands. Horizon A is rich in mineral elements. A large amount of completely decomposed organic matter is present in this region. Fully decomposed organic matter which can be mixed with mineral matter is called humus. Horizon B  (subsoil) recieves various materials reached from top soil. It is thus the area of deposit of materials or illuviation. This horizon is poor in aeration and biological activity. Horizon C contains irregular rock fragments. This horizon is saturated with moisture, represent the water table and have no biological activity.
