    Phloem conducts food by :

    A)  perforated sieve plates

    B)  bast fibres

    C)  xylem parenchyma

    D)  xylem fibres

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Sieve tubes are cylindrical tube-like cells with perforated cross walls called sieve plates. Sieve tubes are responsible for movement of food material and sealing of pores after wounding. Bast fibres (phloem fibres) are sclerenchymatous fibres and provide mechanical support to the plant. Xylem fibres are long and narrow sclerenchymatous fibres with tapering end.  They provide tensile and mechanical strength. Xylem parenchyma are thin walled living cells present in both primary and secondary xylem. They store food materials.
