In root nodules of legumes, leg-haemoglobin is important because

    A)  it transports oxygen to the root nodule

    B)  it acts as an oxygen scavenger

    C)  it provides energy to the nitrogen fixing bacterium

    D)  it acts as a catalyst in transamination

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Leghaemoglobin is red \[{{O}_{2}}\] binding and iron containing protein present in the root nodules. It functions as an oxygen buffer, cycling between the oxidized \[{{(Fe)}^{3+}}\] and reduced \[{{(Fe)}^{2+}}\] forms to keep free \[{{O}_{2}}\] levels  within the nodule low. Thus, it acts as an oxygen scavanger and protects the enzyme nitrogenase from being inactivated by oxygen.
