The radius of the rear wheel of bicycle is twice that of the front wheel. When the bicycle is moving, the angular speed of the rear wheel compared to that of the front is

    A)  greater

    B)  smaller

    C)  same

    D)  exact double

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

     Angular momentum will remain conserved, ie, \[{{I}_{1}}{{\omega }_{1}}={{I}_{2}}{{\omega }_{2}}\]   or \[{{m}_{r}}{{r}_{r}}{{\omega }_{r}}={{m}_{f}}{{r}_{f}}{{\omega }_{f}}\] or \[m2{{r}_{f}}{{\omega }_{r}}=m{{r}_{f}}{{\omega }_{f}}\] \[[{{r}_{r}}=2{{r}_{f}}]\] \[\therefore \] \[2{{\omega }_{r}}={{\omega }_{f}}\] Hence, the angular velocity of rear wheel will be smaller compared to front wheel.
