Hydrogen is prepared from \[{{H}_{2}}O\] by adding

    A)  Ca, which acts as reducing agent

    B)  Al, which acts as oxidising agent

    C)  Ag, which acts as reducing agent

    D)  Au, which acts as oxidising agent

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Ca is very active metal. It acts as reducing agent and reacts with water at room temperature evolving dihydrogen. \[Ca+2{{H}_{2}}O\xrightarrow{{}}Ca{{(OH)}_{2}}+{{H}_{2}}\uparrow \] On the other hand, Al is less reactive metal. It also acts as reducing agent and decomposes boiling water liberating \[{{H}_{2}}\]. \[2Al+3{{H}_{2}}O\] (boiling) \[\xrightarrow{Heat}A{{l}_{2}}{{O}_{3}}+3{{H}_{2}}\uparrow \] Whereas noble metals Ag and Au are not influenced by water.
