  • question_answer
When water is heated from \[0{}^\circ C\] to \[10{}^\circ C\], its volume:

    A)  decreases continuously

    B)  first decreases and then increases

    C)  first increases and then decreases

    D)  increases continuously

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Unlike other liquids water contracts instead of expanding, when heated from \[{{0}^{o}}\] to \[4{{\,}^{o}}C.\]  after which it continues to expand in usual manner. Water has least volume and maximum density at \[4{{\,}^{o}}C.\] Therefore, due to anomalous expansion of water its volume decreases    upto \[4{{\,}^{o}}C\]and then increases.
