What is the catalyst used during the manufacture of nitric acid by Ostwalds method?

    A)  \[A{{l}_{2}}O3\]

    B) (b ) \[Fe\]

    C)  \[{{V}_{2}}{{O}_{5}}\]

    D)  Platinum gauze

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Ostwalds process: This method is used in the manufacture of nitric acid. It is based on the following equations: \[4N{{H}_{3}}+5{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow[gauze]{Platinum}4NO+6{{H}_{2}}O\] \[2NO+{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow{{}}2N{{O}_{2}}\] \[4N{{O}_{2}}+2{{H}_{2}}O+{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow{{}}2N{{O}_{2}}\] A mixture of \[\text{N}{{\text{H}}_{\text{3}}}\]with air in the ratio 1 :8 is passed through a catalyst chamber containing platinum gauze heated at 1155 K. Here, nitric acid is produced by catalytic oxidation of ammonia.
