A bar magnet used in a vibration magnetometer is heated so as to reduce its magnetic moment by 36%. The time period of the magnet (neglecting the changes in the dimensions of the magnet):

    A)                  increases by 36%

    B)                  decreases by 36%

    C)                  increases by 25%

    D)                  decreases by 25%

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

                     The time period in vibration magnetometer is given by                 \[{{T}_{1}}=2\pi \sqrt{\frac{I}{{{M}_{1}}B}}\]                                                       ?(i)                 Similarly               \[{{T}_{2}}=2\pi \sqrt{\frac{I}{{{M}_{2}}B}}\]                       ?(ii)                 Given:   \[{{M}_{2}}={{M}_{1}}-\frac{36}{100}{{M}_{1}}\]                 \[{{M}_{2}}=\frac{64{{M}_{1}}}{100}\]                 From Eqs.(i) and (ii)                  \[\frac{{{T}_{1}}}{{{T}_{2}}}=\sqrt{\frac{64{{M}_{1}}}{100{{M}_{1}}}}=\frac{8}{10}\]                 or            \[\frac{{{T}_{2}}}{{{T}_{1}}}=\frac{10}{8}=1.25\]                 \[{{T}_{2}}=1.25{{T}_{1}}\]
