    Solution :

                     Sexual reproduction is Spirogyra is known as conjugation. In this process one cell, called gametangium (PI. gametangia) functions as female and receives male gamete of adjacent cell, called aplanogamete which is simply a non-flagellated mass of protoplasm      formed      in      the aplanogametangium. This transfer of aplanogamete to gametangium leaves behind an empty cell. Here, assertion and reason both are correct and reason is correct explanation of assertion.
