    Study the following lists :
List-I  (Plant part) List-II (Number of sets of chromosomes)
    A. Sarcotesta of Cycas 1. Haploid
    B. Aposporous gametophores   of Funaria 2. Diploid
    C. Azygospore of Rhizopus 3. Diploid
    D. Hypostomium of Pteris 4. Haploid
    5. Diploid
    The correct match is :

    A)                 A-5         B-3         C-4         D-2

    B)                 A-1         B-4         C-2         D-5

    C)                 A-5         B-1         C-2         D-3

    D)                 A-2         B-4         C-1         D-3

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

The ovule of Cycas contains a three layered unitegmic integument. The outer most, fleshy layer of this integument is call sarcotesta. Because integument is a diploid structure, so, the sarcotesta is also a diploid structure. Aposporous gametophores of Funaria is developed directly from gametophytic tissue (without union of gametes). So, it is a haploid structure. Azygospore in Rhizopus is formed when a gametangium somehow becomes unable to fuse with their respective gametangium. This gametangium now forms two-three layers around us and called a zygospore. Hypostomium of Pteris is a diploid structure.
