Assertion (A) : Decapitation of shoot tip in plants inhibits the growth of their lateral buds. Reason (R) : Accumulation of auxins in lateral buds causes inhibition of their growth. The correct answer is

    A) (A)  and (R) are true and (R) is correct explanation of

    B) (A)  and (R) are true but (R) is not correct explanation of

    C) (A)  is true but (R) is false

    D) (A)  is false but (R) is true

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

Apical dominance is the phenomenon by which presence of apical bud does not allow the nearby lateral buds to grow. The dominance is controlled   by  the   presence   of  high concentration of plant hormones (auxins) at the apex. When the apical bud is removed, the lateral buds sprout. However, if a paste of auxin is painted on the cut end of the decapitated shoot, the lateral buds remain inhibited,as if the apical bud is present.
