One mole of an ideal gas undergoes an isothermal change at temperature T, so that its volume V is doubled, R is the molar gas constant. Work done by the gas during this change is

    A)  RT log 4

    B)  RT log 2

    C)  RT log 1

    D)  RT log 3

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

                     Work done W under isothermal change is given by \[W=RT\times n\,\,lo{{g}_{10}}\left( \frac{{{V}_{f}}}{{{V}_{i}}} \right)\]where \[{{V}_{i}}\]and \[{{V}_{f}}\]are the "initial and final volumes of the gas under isothermal change. \[\therefore \]  \[W=RT\times 1\times {{\log }_{10}}\left( \frac{2V}{V} \right)\] \[(\because \,n=1,\,{{V}_{i}}=V,\,{{V}_{f}}=2V)\] \[=RT{{\log }_{10}}(2)\]
