Identify the correct sequence of the stages in the life cycle of Rhizopus after the reduction division of zygospore.

    A)  Promycelium \[\to \] germ sporangium \[\to \]germ spores \[\to \]mycelium

    B)   Promycelium \[\to \]germ spores \[\to \]germ sporangium \[\to \]mycelium

    C)   Mycelium \[\to \]promycelium \[\to \]germ spores\[\to \]germ sporangium

    D)  Promycelium \[\to \]mycelium \[\to \]germ sporangium \[\to \]zygospores

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Life cycle of Rhizopus is happid or haplontic. On germination, the thick zygosporangium wall and exospore crack Opan. The contents of the zygospore still surrounded by the endospore emerge in the form of a small upright hypha, the promycelium. The promycelium bears the germ sporangium at its top. The germ sporangium produces either (+) or (-) strain germ spores or both of them. Each germ spore on falling on a suitable substratum germinates to form the haplomycelium.
