Choose the correct statement from the following.

    A)  All amino acids have a common isoelectric point

    B)  All naturally occurring a-amino acids are optically active except glycine

    C)  At pH = 0 all amino acids are present as their anions

    D)  In strongly basic solutions, all amino acids are present as their cations

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

With the exception of glycine, all common naturally occurring a-amino acids have an asymmetric carbon atom and thus, are optically active. They bear a positive charge (exist as cations) in acidic solution (ie, at low pH) and a negative charge (exist as anions) in basic solution (ie, at high pH). At isoelectric point, amino acids carry no net charge. This is different for different amino acids.
