  • question_answer
A tuning fork of frequency \[500\text{ }cycles/s\]is sounded on a resonance tube. The first and second resonance is obtained at \[17\text{ }cm\]and\[52\text{ }cm\]. The velocity of sound in m/s is

    A)  \[175\]

    B)  \[350\]

    C)  \[525\]

    D)  \[700\]

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Resonance tube is a closed organ pipe is having an air column of variable length. If the frequency of fork n, then speed of sound is given by \[v=2n({{l}_{2}}-{{l}_{1}})\] where \[{{l}_{1}}\] and \[{{l}_{2}}\] are length of air column. Given, \[n=500\text{ }cycles/s,\] \[{{l}_{2}}=52cm=52\times {{10}^{-2}}m\] \[{{l}_{1}}=17cm=17\times {{10}^{-2}}m\] \[\therefore \] \[v=2\times 500(0.52-17)\times {{10}^{-2}}\] \[\Rightarrow \] \[v=350m/s\]
