Which of the following is a disproportionation reaction?

    A)  \[2C{{u}^{+}}\xrightarrow[{}]{{}}C{{u}^{2+}}+Cu\]

    B)  \[Cu\xrightarrow[{}]{-e}C{{u}^{+}}\]

    C)  \[C{{l}_{2}}\xrightarrow[{}]{+2e}C{{l}^{-}}\]

    D)  \[2Mg+{{O}_{2}}\xrightarrow{{}}2MgO\]

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

Those reactions in which same reactant undergo oxidation and reduction simultaneously are called disproportionation reaction: \[\overset{+1}{\mathop{2C{{u}^{+}}}}\,\xrightarrow{{}}\overset{+2}{\mathop{C{{u}^{2+}}}}\,+\overset{0}{\mathop{Cu}}\,\] In this reaction\[C{{u}^{+}}\]is oxidised to\[C{{u}^{2+}}\]and reduced to Cu. Hence, this is a disproportionation reaction.
