Which of the following is the strongest base?

    A)  Methylamine

    B)  Ammonia

    C)  Dimethylamine

    D)  Triethyl amine

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The basic nature of an amine depends upon availability of lone pair of electron on nitrogen atom. If lone pair is easily available it would be more basic. The alkyl groups are electron releasing groups, hence, increases the electron density around the nitrogen atom and therefore, the basicity of amine increases. But tertiary amine is least basic due to the steric effect of three methyl group. Hence, the order of basic strength is as: \[\underset{dimethylamine}{\mathop{{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{2}}NH}}\,>\underset{methylamine}{\mathop{C{{H}_{3}}N{{H}_{2}}}}\,>\underset{\begin{smallmatrix}  trimethyl \\  amine \end{smallmatrix}}{\mathop{{{(C{{H}_{3}})}_{3}}N}}\,\]\[>\underset{ammonia}{\mathop{N{{H}_{3}}}}\,\]
