Which of the following cations accumulate in the guard cells in light to cause stomatal opening?

    A)  \[C{{a}^{2+}}\]

    B)  \[N{{a}^{+}}\]

    C)  \[{{K}^{+}}\]

    D)  \[M{{n}^{2+}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The malic acid in the guard cell dissociate into H~ and malate. H pass out of the guard cells in exchange of \[{{K}^{+}}\] Some \[{{K}^{+}}\] also absorbed actively from adjacent epidermaj cell with the help of cAMP, ATP and cytokinin. The osmotic concentration of guard cell increase, as a result guard cells absorb water from nearby epidermal cell through endosmosis, swellup and stomatal pore open.
