  • question_answer
At\[{{25}^{o}}C,\]the total pressure of an ideal solution obtained by mixing 3 moles of "A" and 2 moles of "B", is 184 torr. What is the vapour pressure (in torr) of pure "B" at the same temperature? (vapour pressure of pure "A" at \[{{25}^{o}}C,\] is 200 torr):

    A)  180

    B)  160

    C)  16

    D)  100

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

    \[P=P_{A}^{o}\left(\frac{{{n}_{A}}}{{{n}_{A}}+{{n}_{B}}}\right)+P_{B}^{o}\left( \frac{{{n}_{B}}}{{{n}_{A}}+{{n}_{B}}} \right)\] \[184=200\left( \frac{3}{3+2} \right)+P_{B}^{o}\left( \frac{2}{3+2} \right)\] \[184=200\times \frac{3}{5}+P_{B}^{o}\times \frac{2}{5}\] \[184=120+P_{B}^{o}\times \frac{2}{5}\] \[64=P_{B}^{o}\frac{2}{5}\] \[P_{B}^{o}=\frac{64\times 5}{2}=160\,torr\]
