The nucleoprotein structures that occur at the ends of the chromosome are

    A)                  centrosomes

    B)                  telomeres

    C)                  centromeres

    D)                  satellites

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

The tips of chromosomes are called telomeres. These show difference in structure and composition from rest of the chromosomes. Telomere has a unique property as it prevents the ends of chromosomes from sticking together along with it facilates attachment of chromosomes with nuclear envelope. Telomeres contain heterochromatin or repetitives DNA and bounded by specialised proteins, which perform two important functions :                  These prevent the DNA ends from breakage as other parts of DNA and chromosome are the normal sites of frequent recombination and DNA degradation.                 These act as a specialised origin site of replication, that allows the cell to replicate the chromosomal ends. This end replication is facilitated by an unusual DNA polymerase called telomerase.
