    Hambergers phenomenon explains

    A)                  formation of \[HC{{O}_{3}}\]

    B)                  chloride shift

    C)                  oxygen saturation of haemoglobin

    D)                  breathing mechanism

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Due to exit of bicarbonate ions from RBCs into plasma, ionic balance is changed between plasma and RBC to restore this ionic balance, the chloride ions diffuse from the plasma into the RBCs. This movement of chloride ions is called chloride shift or Hamburgers phenomenon. The \[C{{l}^{-}}\]inside RBC combine with \[{{K}^{+}}\] to form potassium chloride (KCl).
