The strategy used to prevent the nematode infection in the roots of tobacco plant is called

    A)  use of agro chemicals

    B)  bt toxin gene

    C)  gene mutation

    D)  RNA interference

    Correct Answer: B

    Solution :

Bt toxin gene obtained from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis used to prevent the nematode (Meloidogyne incognitia) infection in the root of tobacco plant. This nematode decreases the yield of crop. Bt toxin gene is inserted into the plant. This gene is present inactive form (protoxin). But on injestion by insect it immediately converts into active toxic form. This happen due alkaline pH of gut which solubilise crystals. Now, activated toxic form bind to the surface of midgut of epithelial cell of insect and cause swelling and lysis, which finally kill the insect.
