JIPMER Jipmer Medical Solved Paper-1996

  • question_answer
Two electrodes \[{{A}^{2+}}\text{/}A\] and \[{{B}^{+}}\text{/}B\] have \[E_{red}^{\text{o}},\]\[0.62\,V\]and \[-\,1.25\,V\]respectively. The e.m.f. of cell will be:

    A)  0.63 V

    B)  - 0.63 V

    C)  1.87 V

    D)  data are insufficient

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

As B has less reduction potential (more electropositive) than that of A. Hence, B will act as anode and A as cathode in the cell. Hence, \[E_{cell}^{\text{o}}={{E}_{cathode}}-{{E}_{anode}}\] \[=(0.62)-(-1.25)=1.87\,volt\]
