JIPMER Jipmer Medical Solved Paper-2003

  • question_answer
A sample of \[CHC{{l}_{3}}\] before using as an anaesthetic is tested by:

    A)  \[AgN{{O}_{3}}\] solution after boiling with KOH

    B)  Ammonical cuprous chloride

    C)  Fehling solution

    D)  \[AgN{{O}_{3}}\]

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

A pure sample of \[CHC{{l}_{3}}\] produces no. ppt. of \[AgCl\] with \[AgN{{O}_{3}}\] because it does not contain \[C{{l}^{-}}\](chloride) ions. An impure sample. (Which has been oxidised by air) forms a white ppt. of \[AgCl\] with because \[A{{g}^{+}}\] from \[AgN{{O}_{3}}\]combine with the \[C{{l}^{-}}\] ions of \[HCl\] formed by oxidation of \[CHC{{l}_{3}}\].
