How many grams of \[Ca{{C}_{2}}{{O}_{4}}\] will dissolve in distilled water to make one litre of saturated solution? Solubility product of \[Ca{{C}_{2}}{{O}_{4}}\] is \[2.5\times {{10}^{-9}}mo{{l}^{2}}litr{{e}^{-2}}\] and its molecular weight is 128:

    A)  0.0640 g

    B)                                         0.0032 g

    C)         0.0128 g

    D)         0.0064 g

    Correct Answer: D

    Solution :

    \[{{K}_{sp}}\]of \[Ca{{C}_{2}}{{O}_{4}}\] (a binary electrolyte) \[=2.5\times {{10}^{-9}}\] Now we know, \[{{K}_{sp}}={{S}^{2}}\]      (S = molar solubility) or       \[S=\sqrt{{{K}_{sp}}}=\sqrt{2.5\times {{10}^{-9}}}\]                 \[=5\times {{10}^{-5}}m{{L}^{-1}}\] Amount of \[Ca{{C}_{2}}{{O}_{4}}\]to make one litre saturated solution \[=5\times {{10}^{-5}}\,\text{moles}\times 128\,g\,\text{mo}{{\text{l}}^{-1}}\] \[=0.0064\text{ }g\]
