Which of the following is important for muscle contraction and nerve impulse transmission?

    A) \[C{{a}^{2+}}\] ions

    B)        \[M{{g}^{2+}}\] ions

    C) Both (a) and (b)

    D)        \[F{{e}^{2+}}\] ions

    Correct Answer: A

    Solution :

\[C{{a}^{2+}}\] is essential of muscle contraction, neutro-muscular functions and nerve impulse transmission. During nerve impulse transmission, as an impulse arrives at a synaptic knob, calcium ions \[(C{{a}^{2+}})\] diffuse into the knobs from surrounding tissue fluid. \[C{{a}^{2+}}\] trigger a process in which numerous synaptic vesicles fuse with the membrane of the knob and the areas of fusion break down; releasing the contents of vesicles into the fluid of synaptic clefts.
