  • question_answer
The moment of inertia of a uniform circular disc of radius R and mass M about an axis passing from the edge of the disc and normal to the disc is

    A)  \[\text{M}{{\text{R}}^{\text{2}}}\]

    B)                         \[\frac{1}{2}\text{M}{{\text{R}}^{\text{2}}}\]

    C)         \[\frac{3}{2}\text{M}{{\text{R}}^{\text{2}}}\]

    D)         \[\frac{7}{2}\text{M}{{\text{R}}^{\text{2}}}\]

    Correct Answer: C

    Solution :

The moment of inertia of uniform circular disc about an axis through its centre and normal to ifs plane \[{{I}_{CG}}=\frac{1}{2}M{{R}^{2}}\] According to theorem of parallel axis, the moment of inertia of the uniform circular disc about an axis passing from the edge of the disc f and normal to the disc,        \[I={{I}_{CG}}+M{{R}^{2}}=\frac{1}{2}M{{R}^{2}}+M{{R}^{2}}=\frac{3}{2}M{{R}^{2}}\]
